Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) is a long-term client, and THP is a trusted partner on their design and construction team. After many years of successful collaboration on projects of every size, CCHMC turned to THP for one of their largest and most ambitious projects to date: a nine-story tower with a mechanical mezzanine and five spokes, one of which connected to an existing building. The new Critical Care Building will help to provide a superior patient experience by giving more opportunity for individual rooms for each patent.
The Critical Care Building includes an Emergency Department with 60 patient rooms, 249 critical care beds, Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, and many other services. The building also includes three separate green roofs totaling 28,000 gross square feet (GSF), two of which function as public meditation gardens.
THP provided structural engineering services for this fast-track schedule project. We minimized on-site disruptions by prefabricating many of the site’s components. For example, approximately 150 mechanical racks, engineered in collaboration with the MEP contractor, were constructed offsite with all piping and conduit, shipped to the site, and hoisted into position. This process alone reduced the schedule by two months and saved $1 million. Additionally, THP collaborated with the architect and façade consultant to develop prefabricated exterior panels, including metal studs, insulation, vapor barrier, and backup board. Throughout the entire process THP had a strong site presence, including 53 field reports plus additional visits to ensure quality control, maintaining strong relationships with the contractors, and ensuring that everyone on the team understood the project’s constructability.
