Structural Engineering

West Pavilion

Location: Cincinnati, Ohio
Owner: University of Cincinnati

Project Overview

The West Pavilion includes a new 115,000-square-foot building with a press box, luxury suites, and event space. The existing site constraints and challenging building design requirements led to the development of a unique sloped structural frame. The sloping structural frame permitted proper viewing angles to the field and allowed for a dramatic 40-foot cantilever at the north end of the building. The careful integration of steel, concrete, and precast structures resulted in shorter schedule durations and reduced structural costs.

The East Concourse includes new two-story concession and restroom buildings, a new walkway suspended from the existing Reed Shank Pavilion, and modifications to the existing Varsity Village garage.

The new structures were designed and detailed to minimize the amount of reinforcing required at existing structures.

The stadium received the Excellence in Architecture for Building Additions, Renovation or Adaptive Reuse from the Society for College and University Planning and the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education (SCUP/AIA CAE) in 2016. The project has LEED Silver certification.
