Co-op Chronicles featuring Matthew Hall
Meet Co-Op Matthew Hall
Matthew Hall is a third-year civil engineering student at the University of Cincinnati. This past semester, he joined THP as a co-op, gaining real-world experience in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. We asked Matthew what inspired his career path, what he enjoys most about the AEC field, and how THP’s program differs from his previous co-op roles.
Why Did You Choose Engineering as a Career?
From a young age, I’ve always been fascinated by the world of construction. My mom used to take me past construction sites, where we would watch for hours—until she finally couldn’t take it anymore! Later, I began working on small projects with my grandpa, from building birdhouses to tackling home renovations.
These early experiences helped shape my interest. I’ve always enjoyed environments that are both challenging and competitive, so pursuing a career in engineering was a natural decision. I knew I wanted to solve real problems, and engineering gives me that opportunity every day.
What Do You Enjoy About Working in the AEC Industry?
What I love most about the AEC industry is the freedom to be creative. Each project brings something new, requiring innovative thinking and collaboration.
In addition, working in this field has introduced me to a wide range of professionals—from engineers and project owners to sales reps and consultants. These interactions have helped me see how all the pieces fit together. They also remind me how important it is to learn from everyone I meet, regardless of their role.
Why Did You Choose THP for Your Co-Op?
As I approached the midpoint of my degree, I started focusing more on structural engineering. THP stood out immediately due to its diverse project portfolio. I was especially drawn to its new construction work, which I had seen firsthand in the city.
Furthermore, I liked the flexibility THP offered through its different service groups—restoration, building envelope, and parking. This made me feel like I could explore different areas while still gaining deep technical experience.
What Makes Co-Oping at THP Different?
Compared to my previous co-ops, THP gave me significantly more access to real project work. Instead of only completing small tasks, I’ve been able to contribute meaningfully through site visits, design support, and active participation in engineering discussions.
As a result, I’ve gained a much better understanding of what engineers actually do on a daily basis. Coming to work here is exciting because I feel like a true member of the team. The people at THP prioritize my learning, offer helpful insight, and support my growth.
Overall, I would recommend a THP co-op to any student who wants a well-rounded, hands-on experience in the AEC industry.
