Zach Holdren_THP Co op On SiteTHP Co-op, Zach Holdren, gaining valuable hands-on experience.

Zach Holdren is a fourth-year student majoring in Architectural Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. We asked Zach why he chose engineering as a career, his perspective on working in the AEC industry, and what led him to pursue a co-op at THP.

Why did you choose civil/structural engineering as a future career?

I originally planned to go into architecture, but I loved math too much to let it go. I decided on architectural engineering to bridge the two worlds. It was one of the careers listed by the University of Cincinnati, and it felt like the perfect fit.

What do you like about working in the AEC industry?

What I like about working in the AEC industry is the variety of projects I get involved with. I’ve always been drawn to the historical preservation—that’s what led me to THP. When I was attending career fairs at the University of Cincinnati, I noticed firms that focus on historical preservation, but I already knew John Millar and decided to reach out to learn about what THP does in that area. That connection and THP’s involvement in preservation work really sealed the deal for me.

What attracted you to THP?

I was drawn to THP because of its focus on historical building envelope repair. During my interviews, I learned that I’d have the chance to be on site, which is a great learning opportunity. I value being able to get out in the field and get away from a desk, so that aspect was a big attraction for me.

What was your favorite thing about co-oping at THP?

My favorite part about co-oping at THP was getting out in the field for hands-on learning. I enjoyed the site visits and absorbing information that you just don’t get in school. Working on the courthouse project was a highlight and it taught me so much. I’ve also been fascinated by Rope Access; even though I’ve mostly been the guy on the ground taking notes, it’s been exciting to learn about it. Overall, I loved that I was always learning and taking in new knowledge.

Why Co Op at THP?

Everyone at THP is incredibly helpful and willing to answer questions, which makes it a great environment for learning. The work itself is interesting—these are projects you don’t get to see every day. A lot of what I worked on involves historical buildings, and I love that when I drive by with friends, I can point out the ones I’ve contributed to.

What really stands out to me is the passion everyone has for their work; it’s motivating and pushes me to do my best.
