Old Chemistry Building Renovation & Addition

Project Overview
The University of Cincinnati undertook a major renovation and expansion of its historic Old Chemistry Building, including the renovation of 63,000 SF of the original 1917 structure and its 1930s addition, along with the construction of a new six-story, 210,000 SF laboratory wing. THP provided building envelope consulting and structural engineering services.
THP’s building envelope scope included assessments and drawing reviews to identify and recommend targeted repairs. The original façades were generally in good condition, with the primary concern being deterioration of the structural steel supporting the terra cotta cornice.
For the laboratory addition, THP provided structural engineering for a system consisting of a steel moment frame, concrete shear walls, slab-on-metal deck construction, spread footings, and drilled piers. THP proposed alternative framing concepts that resulted in meaningful cost savings. The project presented several technical challenges, including strict vibration criteria and limited site access due to existing buildings on three sides of the addition. To address these constraints, prefabricated panels were incorporated, offering both schedule and cost advantages for the congested site.
